Hillside Village names Director of Facilities Services

The Board of Trustees of The Prospect-Woodward Home has appointed Andrew Kropff to be the Director of Facilities Services at Hillside Village.

In his new position, Kropff will establish and oversee the Maintenance, Security, and Housekeeping Departments.  At present, Kropff helps monitor construction progress on the site. 

Kropff was most recently the District Manager for Amerigas in Southeast Alaska. His other previous experience includes Hospital Manager for the Wasilla Veterinary Clinic, Business Manager for two Primary Care Medical Practices for the Veterans Administration, and Director of Facilities of Birch Bay Retirement Village in Bar Harbor, ME. 

Kropff earned an Associates Degree in Allied Health Science degree from the College of the Air Force. He also holds USAF Certifications as an EMT, Surgeons Assistant, and in Leadership and Management. He is also a Certified Building Operator, Water System Operator, and Propane System Operator. 

His previous community service includes the Bar Harbor & Elizabeth Fire Department Safety Officer and Firefighter, Rotary International President and Director, Bar Harbor Food pantry Director and President, and College of the Atlantic Advisor and Adjunct Lecturer. Kropff also has been a lifelong Scoutmaster and volunteered in various roles for the YMCA.

Hillside Village names Health Center Director

KEENE—The Prospect-Woodward Board of Trustees has named Mary Ellen Dunham the Hillside Village Health Center Administrator.  She is a senior living professional with experience in all facets of operating a nursing home and assisted living community.

“I am passionate about providing seniors the opportunity to age successfully while maintaining their dignity and independence with the safety, structure and services they need,” she said.

Dunham was the Executive Director at Sentry Hill at York Harbor, an upscale retirement community located in York, Maine, for the last five years, where she was responsible for the day-to-day operations. Sentry Hill consists of 52 independent living units and an 80-bed assisted living facility.

Dunham previously was Administrator for Oceanside Nursing Center and Partridge House Assisted Living in Hampton, NH, and before that was Executive Director and Administrator of The Mark Wentworth Home in Portsmouth for sixteen years. At Mark Wentworth, Dunham was part of an 18-month, $14-million renovation project to create 48 assisted living suites and a 19-bed nursing facility.

Dunham earned a Masters in Healthcare Administration from the University of New Hampshire. She also earned a diploma in Nursing from the St. Elizabeth’s Hospital School of Nursing in Brighton, MA, and a Bachelor’s degree in Healthcare Administration from St. Joseph’s College in Windham, ME.

She received new credentials in early 2018 from the NAB to be a Health Services Executive. NAB  (National Association of Long term Care Administrator Boards) is the leading authority on licensing, credentialing and regulating administrators of organizations along the continuum of long-term care. Both NH and ME have licensed her as a Nursing Home Administrator.  She is also a Registered Nurse in Maine and all other compact states, which includes New Hampshire.

Hillside Village Names Executive Director

The Board of Trustees of The Prospect-Woodward Home has appointed Jolynn Whitten to be the Executive Director of Hillside Village, a not-for-profit Life Plan Community under construction on Wyman Road in Keene and expected to open at the end of 2018.

The Hillside Village complex sits on nine acres of a 66-acre parcel with 140 apartments for independent living and a state-of-the-art Continuing Care Health Center that will comprise 80 private rooms for assisted living, nursing and specialized memory care.

In her new position, Whitten will be responsible for overall operations with immediate focus on putting together her leadership team. When the community opens later this year, she will oversee all daily operations, occupancy, finances, regulatory compliance, and resident and employee engagement and satisfaction.

“I am both honored and delighted to be serving the future Hillside Village residents as their Executive Director,” Whitten said.  “The Trustees have worked tirelessly to make this project a reality, and I am very proud to be a part of it.”

Whitten was Executive Director at Sandhill Cove Retirement Living in Palm City, Florida, since 2008. Sandhill Cove is a LifeCare CCRC (Continuing Care Retirement Community) with 225 independent living apartments and a 56-bed health center.  She had also been Administrator and Associate Executive Director of Vantage House in Columbia, Maryland, from 2005 until 2008. She also held Nursing Home Administrator positions at HCR ManorCare in Baltimore, MD, and with Genesis Eldercare Network throughout the state of Maryland.

Whitten earned a Master of Health Science degree in Health, Finance and Management from The Johns Hopkins University School of Hygiene and Public Health in Baltimore, MD. She earned her BA in Health Services Administration with a Minor in Sociology from Marywood College in Scranton, PA, where she graduated Summa Cum Laude. During her second year at Hopkins, Whitten took part in a 12-month internship at Levindale Hebrew Geriatric Center and Hospital, allowing her to complete the State of Maryland’s Administrator in Training (AIT) program and receive a Maryland Nursing Home Administrator License.  Whitten later received a Nursing Home Administrator License from the State of Florida Department of Health in 2009.

“This is the first community that I have been involved with from the ground up, and I am looking forward to the creative and unique things that we have the opportunity to do,” she said. “Interest in Hillside Village has been phenomenal,” said Whitten.  “Our marketing staff has pre-sold 89% of the apartments, and we now have over 124 depositors eagerly waiting to move in towards the end of this year.” She said that Hillside Village still has 16 affordable one- and two-bedroom apartments left to sell in various floor plans, all with private balconies.

Whitten is with Life Care Services (LCS), a national company that manages and supports a variety of senior living communities, ranging from continuing care retirement communities to rental communities. The Trustees of Prospect-Woodward contracted with LCS to provide management services in day-to-day operations, marketing, health care, regulatory compliance, risk management, human resources, technology and finance. The services started with LCS aiding in the search for the executive director position.

DEW MacMillin, general contractor on the $56 million project, began construction in June of 2017.  This Life Plan retirement community will have more than 30,000 square feet of common space housing a 200-seat performing arts center, an indoor heated pool, and a casual tavern and restaurant-style dining—according to information from the Hillside Village office at 149 Emerald Street in the Center at Colony Mill in Keene.

A Life Plan is a guarantee of long-term health care for life at a predictable rate, allowing you to protect your assets from rising costs. All Hillside residents age 62 and over will have this health care guarantee for future long-term care in the on-campus Healthcare Center at approximately the same cost of living in their apartment—whether they need assisted living, nursing care or memory support care.

Hillside Village Purchases Miracles in Motion Property

December 1, 2017

The Hillside Village Board of Trustees were approached by the Miracles in Motion Board in August to see if we had interest in purchasing their 18-acre property.  Miracles in Motion was having challenges financially and had decided the model that they were using to do business was no longer sustainable. 

The Hillside Village Board voted unanimously to purchase this parcel at its assessed value.  The closing will occur later this month.  This parcel of land was originally part of the Dodds Farm and while we feel saddened about losing Miracles in Motion as a neighbor, the historical value combined with future potential make this an opportunity Hillside Village could not pass up.

This was never part of the original plan and was not predetermined but we all agree that this is a gift for future use and possible development. We all wish Miracles in Motion the best.

Sims Finances Start-Up Life Plan Community´╗┐

The Prospect-Woodward Home is a nonprofit corporation which presently operates a 24-bed assisted living facility in Keene, New Hampshire. The Corporation is the result of a merger in July 2016 between two long-standing New Hampshire nonprofit organizations, Prospect Hill Home and The Woodward Home, and traces its roots to 1874.
